Decanting Wine - What's the Point?!

Wine is a beverage that has been enjoyed for centuries, and definitely for good reason! A good bottle of wine can be the perfect complement to a meal, a celebration, or a quiet evening at home. However, some wine enthusiasts (myself included!) believe that the process of decanting a bottle of wine can take the drinking experience to the next level. But why bother decanting wine and does it really do anything to what I am drinking? Well, let's dive into it!

Firstly, decanting wine allows it to breathe. When wine is bottled, it is sealed with a cork to ensure that the wine is not exposed to any air. This is great for keeping the wine fresh, but it also means that the wine has not had a chance to interact with oxygen since the bottling process. When wine is poured into a decanter, it is exposed to oxygen, which helps to aerate the wine and release its full flavor profile. This is especially important for young, tannic wines, which can be quite harsh when first opened.

Secondly, decanting wine can help to remove sediment. As wine ages, it can develop sediment, which is made up of tannins and other solids that have settled at the bottom of the bottle. When wine is poured into a decanter, the sediment is left behind in the bottle, which means that the wine poured into the glass is clearer and more visually appealing.

Thirdly, decanting wine can help to regulate temperature. Depending on the type of wine, it may be served at a specific temperature to allow for optimal flavor. Decanting wine can help to bring the wine to the right temperature, especially if it has been stored in a cooler environment (as wines should be to be properly aged - but more on that in a later blog).

Finally, decanting wine can be a beautiful and elegant way to serve wine. A decanter can be a stunning centerpiece on a table, and pouring wine into a decanter can be a beautiful and graceful act that adds to the overall experience of enjoying a good bottle of wine.

In conclusion, decanting wine can enhance the drinking experience in a number of ways. It allows the wine to breathe, removes sediment, regulates temperature, and can be an impressive way to serve wine. If you are a wine enthusiast or simply want to elevate your next dinner party, consider decanting your next bottle of wine. Cheers to you, and let's open a bottle together soon!
